Designer Jason Santa Maria received a Cease and Desist letter from a former employer citing clauses from his contract and demanding that he remove any references to them, including all images, from his site.
It meant that the only legal way he could use his designs in his portfolio was to obtain express permission from the rights owner, his former employer, or challenge the restriction in court.
This is screwed up in a way that artists aren’t allowed to showcase their previous professional work given specific signed contract. I’ve been a designer for over five years now and time is closing in on me that I should open my own web design company. If some of these laws apply to me I’d have to start from scratch, leaving my glorified days behind. Work for Hire is an evil scheme.
This calls for attention to fellow designers and artists. Make sure you read and understand your contracts well.
