What if Google offered free Wi-Fi?

2005.08.16.14.58 · 15 comments

This is speculation but I can’t help to think that this will embrace our future.

What if Google (GOOG) wanted to give Wi-Fi access to everyone in America? And what if it had technology capable of targeting advertising to a user’s precise location? The gatekeeper of the world’s information could become one of the globe’s biggest Internet providers and one of its most powerful ad sellers, basically supplanting telecoms in one fell swoop. Sounds crazy, but how might Google go about it?

What about Asia? Some multi million dollar company out there should consider this. I like Google, and nothing beats FREE, but any one person or company with too much power is prone for disaster.

What do you think?

I was just discussing a similar opportunity the other day!! I was saying that Westfield (big property management company that owns the buildings shopping malls are made out of) should do exactly what you just said. Turn their centres into hot-spots, where the user either pays for access or has to deal with the ads that the centre drops into their PC.

Exactly the same thing. I think it’d be a great idea.

i think that would be an excellent idea, and wouldn’t cost them too much. plus it would be great advertising.

If Google does that, it really wants to be the sole name in every internet users’ mind. It would be really cool also, though I doubt it would do that in N America without the fear of being sued for having services and “prices” just to drive out competition or customers away from competitors, and thus be branded as a company involved in unlawful practises.

Jax » Dude if every mall and shopping center in the world were just as open minded we’d be in net haven right now. Unfortunately that isn’t how the corporate world works. Those CEOs need to be replaced with geeks like Sergey and Larry.

liz » Advertising is exactly what Google would aim for. The free connetion would expose more people to the internet, hence information technology where their ads rule.

Bes » I don’t mind Google being the internet as long as they keep some level of transparency and be straight with us.

jeZz » I didn’t know your blog was still “active”. I’ll come now.

Blastafuzix » They’re already working on their own webbrowser. With everything shifting over to the web soon OSes wouldn’t matter so much anymore, it’ll only matter which browser you use since all your apps would be online. GoogleNet + Google Browser + Google Search + Google Earth + Google Everything = who knows what??! :!:
