PeepCulture gets a new face - July 2009

after many months of hibernation the creative subconscious in me finally squeezes thru. behold my first attempt to revamp the techfresh network, peepculture deconstructed, re-engineered, reconstructed, refaced and relaunched.

if you own a fashion / lifestyle blog for men and are up for a new wing man, hit me up for a link swap!

enjoy!

php memory_limit

for weeks i’ve been going crazy cuz techfresh.net’s auto backup wouldn’t work.  the subdomains were fine, and all my other blogs would backup regularly, just not techfresh.net.

another problem was that techfresh.net’s archive page would never finish loading.  in other words it’s constantly cut off.

http://www.techfresh.net/archives/

and yet another problem, i couldn’t export techfresh.net’s database from phpmyadmin.  it would return a zero sized file.  so i’m left with mysqldump, which is a big hassle.

headache headache headache.

days of headache.

weeks of headache.

worrying.  that.  something.  bad.  would.  happen.  and.  i.  wouldn’t.  have.  backups.  oh God!!

then..  a little epiphany.

php memory_limit

*doh*

how stupid have i been?  techfresh.net’s database is like 45mb and the memory limit was 32mb.  doh doh doh!!

so i increased it to 64mb, restarted plesk and voila!

and the archives are showing fine now too!  :)

hope this little folly will find its way to help somebody else in the future.

i own 20+ domains and manage 10+ more for friends and clients.  almost every month i get a notification from my registrar that i need to renew a certain domain.  i’m getting tired of this and i’m considering synching my domain renewal dates.  but while it may make things simpler i will have to pay everything at once, in bulk.  so out of curiosity, i’d like to hear your take on this.  you can leave your thoughts in the comments.

after many months of torment of being google’s 3rd, i am now’s google’s first again!!  not sure how long for this time but i’m glad the love is still around.

lemon

maybe i’m not being reasonable right now but i’m pretty pissed at the fact that techfresh.net‘s pr dropped from 5 to 3 overnight.  i’m not really sure what happened but i speculate there was a ddos attack around the time google performed another routine dance.  this would make techfresh.net disappear for a while and that’s probably why google dropped the pr, assuming it’s no longer good to go.  anyway, i have my suspicions but i guess pissing off wouldn’t do me much good.

this has however put me in check.

i realize now that it hasn’t been wise at all for me to rely on just search engine traffic all along.  that i should start doing some guerrilla marketing and start rebuilding traffic by other creative means.  it also made me realize how fragile and transient anything in life is.  how it could all be taken away from you just like that and you’ll go from rich to poor, from healthy as a horse to dead in a split second.  it simply reminds me not to take anything in life for granted, no matter how small or how big it is.

i’m just thankful that traffic hasn’t all been affected that much.  and i’m thankful that despite what great problems maybe coming my way, i still have my feet on the ground and my arms around the person i love the most.

if you have any ideas on how to survive pr drops and/or how to build blog traffic by natural means, please do share.
