machu picchu

we’re in the middle of planning a south-east-asian backpacking trip and my mind got so excited i couldn’t sleep.  so i came back downstairs to the office and started browsing travel blogs and i bumped into machu pichu.

from wikipedia:

Machu Picchu is a pre-Columbian Inca site located 2,430 metres (8,000 ft) above sea level[1]. It is situated on a mountain ridge above the Urubamba Valley in Peru, which is 80 kilometres (50 mi) northwest of Cuzco and through which the Urubamba River flows. The river is a partially navigable headwater of the Amazon River. Often referred to as “The Lost City of the Incas”, Machu Picchu is one of the most familiar symbols of the Inca Empire.

ok i’m way ahead of myself now.  before the trip even happens i already want to go someplace else.  i never knew why but i’m always fascinated by ancient ruins and massive structures built out of stone.

all right, go see for yourself, video after the jump.

Oh wow, Machu Piccu! That is one of the places I definitely have to visit before I die! It was always very much on top of my agenda to see. But somehow, either it was to expensive to get there, I was still locked behind the iron curtain way back in the 80′s, or I was too young with too little time when visiting Honduras closeby. Or it was too dangerous a country or too far away from my present location or any other good (or bad) excuse. Have you seen the Anthony Bourdain ‘No reservations’ episode on Travel & Living about it? Arglglglg! Envy!!! So when are we going, Jerm? ;-)

Anyway, didn’t you guys want to go on a trip to Europe first? But maybe I’m mixing up something.

For favorite ruin towns in Asia I can only recommend Angkor Wat in Cambodia, which is really a breath-taking sight. We will soon (hopefully within the next 4 weeks) visit Hampi here in India, recommended by Karsten a few months back. ;-)

i haven’t seen the anthony bourdain episode but i’m quite convinced about machu picchu already. it would be awesome to go with you and r in a couple years! :)

Wow, sounds like a great plan! Luang Prabang is lovely as well. We did the Mekong tour a few years back and the cascading waterfalls around L.P. are great as well and a very pleasant swim. Laos is like Thailand 20 years ago, very charming and sooo affordable. You both will love it!

Oh my, you have even autobots working for you. Now I know, why I never have a chance to catch up! Thanks for installing the plugin though, makes things so much easier!

Yeah, we’re still awake as well, just watching Roadhouse2 and Transformers on TV, waiting for the Oscars to begin, of course rooting for Slumdog Millionaire. Cheers for now! ;-)

Oh yeah – and hopefully Mickey Rourke gets the Best Actors Oscar for ‘The Wrestler’ – about time. Anyway, there are no serious alternatives.

Brad Pitt in Curious Case…? Give me a break. And Sean Penn always makes the same weird movies over and over again, so what! ‘Milk’ looks similar to ‘All the Kings Men’ or ‘I Am Sam’. Also he got one for ‘Mystic River’. Enough already. ‘Frost/Nixon’ or ‘The Visitor’ my ass.

Okay, I shut up for now…good night and good luck.

you guys are waaay ahead of us. hopefully by the time we travel there’s still things to discover, unseen things for our eyes (and our camera) to capture. lol. i also just learned that laos and cambodia were once thailand. so i guess going to those three countries is just like going to a bigger country (and there i was thinking “yeah baby we’re going to 3 countries!!”).

as for the oscars, i fell asleep and missed it. but then again i’m simply into watching movies that entertain me and can’t be bothered too much with whether they win awards or not! ;-)

so when are we gonna see more of goa from you?

Ahead? Nahhh, maybe we are only wayyyyy older than you guys. :)

Yeah, the Oscars were quite demanding; while the show was actually okay, the advertising breaks were so many, with repeating ads and seriously upsetting that it spoiled the whole thing. They must really think, viewers are plain stupid. TV is becoming worse and more boring. Better to get out and get a life….
