At one point of my miserable existence I swallowed 50 Extra Strength Tylenol tablets. A minute later I puked all 50 out — I counted! Apparently the gods didn’t agree that I should be in their presence yet. Instead I found this class action lawsuit, proof that most often I’m just too lucky of a bastard.
Acetaminophen is the active ingredient in a variety of over-the-counter drugs, most notably Tylenol. Acetaminophen overdose is the leading cause of calls to the Poison Control Centers across the United States. It is estimated that acetaminophen poisoning calls exceed 100,000 per year. Studies indicate that acetaminophen overdose results in over 56,000 injuries, 2,500 hospitalizations, and an estimated 450 deaths per year.
The most significant risk involving acetaminophen is acute liver toxicity. Data acquired from the U.S. Acute Liver Failure Study Group registry indicates that nearly 50% of all acute liver failure in this country is linked to acetaminophen poisoning. There have even been reported cases of acute liver toxicity in individuals whose acetaminophen dosage did not exceed 4 grams/day. Surprisingly, a dosage of 4 grams/day falls within the recommended dosage for Extra Strength Tylenol.
Acetaminophen based drugs have been the cause of acute liver failure in hospitals around the country. While the drug can be safe in small doses, it can potentially be fatal for those who consume alcohol, take the drug in high doses, or simply use it regularly.
It’s still my favorite drug, it does the job too well, kills hangovers instantly. But I might [should] switch to the safer paracetamol.

lol, how come u dont put the time anymore?.. anyway, easy on the pill intake.. geez!.. I dind’t know tylenol was good for hangovers.. I rather not take any medicine until the alcohol was exited my body lol.. I have found though, that excedrin works best for headaches (which is what I would use tylenol for).. not no more! I say!

Tylenol kills pain, and pain I have too much of in this life.. *lol* I’ll grab some Excedrin next visit to the drug store.. see if it’s any good. Do you know what the base ingredient is? I don’t put the time up cuz it’s annoying since I currently live in a weird timezone. And transience givin up on liquor is almost as good as dying my fun..

I hate to break in on booty business but I just wanted to say great post, JErm. I heard of this before and warned a couple tylenol guzzlers off it before they died. Maybe you’ve saved a few more lives. I’m really surprised Tylenol hasn’t been sued to death. Look what they did to tobacco companies, for selling something that’s been used for hundreds of years. Tylenol should be forced to hand over a couple billion and then shut down.

there was an incident way, way back when tylenol staged a massive recall of their products. they paid a lot of damages. but i guess that’s why they’re still up and running. they have great crisis PR.

for my hangovers i use 800mg ibuprophin ( before i go to bed) and wake up fine in the morning. xo Jen

If you’re going to take tylenol you need to take antioxidants to keep from getting liver damage. (Do a search on google, if you don’t believe me.)
You need to take n-acetyl-cystenie and lipoic acid. Do a search like “tylenol n-acetyl-cysteine” and you’ll see that hospitals give this stuff to children who’ve overdosed on it.
It’s bad medicine, but if you’re going to take it, be smart.
